mdutil -- manage the metadata stores used by Spotlight

sudo mdutil [-pEsav] [-i on | off] mountPoint

See System Preferences; spotlight

-E erase each local store for the volume, will be rebuilt if appropriate.
-i on | off Sets indexing status, indexing may be delayed due to low disk space or other conditions.

System Preferences seems to override this!

-p Spotlight caches indexes of some network devices locally.
local caches be purged to the appropriate network device.
-s show the indexing status of the listed volumes.
-a Apply command to all volumes.

mtmd

Mobile Time Machine snapshot daemon.

Creates snapshots of files in real time.
These are moved to timeMachine backup disk during "backup".

Obeys the same exclusion configuration as external Time Machine backups. There are no configurations to mtmd, aside from exclusions, and users should not run mtmd manually. See
